Description:

The 2017 Stranded Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is the first of its lineage. We have concentrated on Cabernet Sauvignon in Margaret River and rightly so…it’s the king of the red varieties we grow here. However, Merlot has a proper place here, too, and it’s a natural partner to Cabernet Sauvignon and many places around the world.

We source our Merlot from a vineyard in Yallingup, the far north of the Margeret River region where its generous rich fruit ripens easily in this ideal setting. Cabernet Sauvignon is also sourced from 2 vineyards in the northern half of Margeret River.

All of the Stranded is wild fermented in closed and open top vessels with a mix of hand plunging and pump over cap management. The wines are kept on skins for 20-30 days post ferment then pressed to a mix of new (20%) and older barriques and puncheons for 12 months maturation.

The 2017 Stranded is the first in a new line for Snake and Herring to further showcase Cabernet and Merlot in Margaret River.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2017 Stranded Cabernet Merlot has gentle dried herb and roast tomato complexity underlying the varietal blackberry and dark plum scents. The palate has richness and softness through the mid with some subtle spicy oak notes and drives through the finish with gentle finely layered tannins. Texturally we are looking for generosity and warmth with a mix of sweet darker fruit and chocolate with a slight savoury edge.
