Expert Reviews

Bronze & 87 Pts - Halliday Rating.

Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is clean, without any suggestion of bacterial or other activity; spicy dark plum aromas lead into a fully-framed and bodied wine, with some varietal character, good oak and handling of extract. A well-made wine; the limitations lie in the vineyard, which will always provide fruit headed towards dry red.

James Halliday, 19 June 2021.

The 2001 Pinot Noir Hickenbotham Vineyard is the final release of this cuvee. It offers an interesting perfume of plums, tomato skins, herbs, and sweet black cherry/currant fruit in a medium-bodied style.

RATING: 92

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The Pinot vines were planted in 1975, and are cropped at 2–2.5 tonnes per acre. The wine was fermented on wild yeasts, as are all of the Clarendon Hills wines, and has been matured in a combination of 70% new oak and 30% one year old oak from Alliers and Vosges. The wine has been on wild yeast lees since March 2001 and never racked or fined.

The colour is outstanding, with vibrant deep mauve purple tones.

The nose took a little coaxing, but that is expected as the wine tasted was from tank and has suffered a little from movement.

Aromas of violets and spice emerge over dark cherry, plum and liquorice background notes.

After bottling the wine will blossom superbly.

The palate displays strong varietal character and builds momentum on the palate to deliver a strong power wave.

Flavours of dark cherry, plum, spice and liquorice emerge over a subtle earth/game background.

Excellent structure, with fine grained tannins and generous ripe fruit mouthfeel.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
