Wine Summary Image

Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz- ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multivineyard

blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented, providing a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage.

"The 2007 Bin 28 is concordant to its stylistic blueprint - it's both ready to drink... or cellar." Penfolds Chief Winemaker - Peter Gago

Expert Reviews

Dark, deep red-purple; in traditional Bin 8 style, stiffened a little by the '07 vintage; the dark fruits on the bouquet and medium- to full-bodied palate run through plum, blackberry, licorice and chocolate; typical tannin and oak management. Rating 93 - Drink by 2022 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Dark plum red.

Aroma

Assertive chocolate and spice, shrouded in a freshly mixed fruitcake mixture (Irish Christmas cake.) From out of an aromatic mist, scents of olive tapenade, creamy mustard seed and almond may be detected. New Oak? Not likely.

Palate

Evenly weighted across the palate - facilitated by mouth-coating tannins. A mix of cooked beetroot and liqueur chocolate are intertwined with dark berried fruits. Maturation in older oak has sensitively assimilated all flavour & structural elements, sans intrusion.

Cellaring

Now to 2022.

Food Matching

Rare rib-eye steak.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

The 2007 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz is a style that never sees any new oak, only older American hogsheads. It has intense warm blackberry and lifted kirsch aromas with some chocolate and black olives. Full-bodied with crisp acid and medium-firm fine tannins, it gives a good concentration of evolving fruit and a long finish. Drinking now, it has the stuffing to cellar to 2019.

With a lot of changes happening around the Foster’s Group, it is business as usual at Penfolds…which seems to operate within its own world. But this is no small world. The vineyard holdings here are vast and the connections with growers go back generations. Chief winemaker Peter Gago is the very well spoken front-man for the production team backed-up Kym Schroeter in charge of the whites and Steve Lienert crafting some very fine, consistent and sometimes inspired reds. If Champagne is all about the art of blending, then Penfolds is the Champagne of Australian wine. Those that think large companies producing wines that emphasize blending can’t make great wines need to think about the Champagne model or simply try some of Penfolds top wines to become believers. That said – check out their recent single vineyard release: the very special 2004 Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon, the first release of a wine made purely from this 100+ year old single block (perhaps the oldest block of Cabernet in the world?) since 1996. Rating 90 - Lisa Perrotti Brown MW, Wine Advocate(DEC/2010)
