Expert Reviews

Rating 96 - James Halliday - Published on 20 Jul 2011, Australian Wine Companion

Still dense and strong in colour, the bouquet is primarily powered by sweet blackcurrant fruit, the palate packed with dense blackcurrant/blackberry fruit, the tannins still to fully soften but in balance.

Brick red.

Aroma

Intense aromas of berries, mint, blueberry, eucalypt, tobacco leaf, and plums along with some developed earthy, and smokey characters.

A full bodied and powerful palate displaying blueberries, mint, cherry, liquorice and cinnamon characters, with some developed leathery, cigar box notes.

It shows a classic Cabernet Sauvignon palate structure with rich, even tannins and a long savoury finish.

In the pantheon of Australian cabernet this wine attempts to sit as one of the Gods – and value-assessments aside, it’s certainly a very good wine. A blend of McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills fruit (no longer Coonawarra) the nose has an ethereal, fragrant leaf-sweetness (licoricey basil and sweet dried tobacco), a lifted mintiness, plus nicely settled and seasoned black fruit power. It’s all quite charming.
