Wine Summary Image

Stephen and Prue Henschke, fifth generation winemakers at the family cellars at Keyneton, selected Lenswood as a new vineyard site in the Adelaide Hills, the heart of the South Mount Lofty Ranges. At 550 metres, the Lenswood vineyards not only offer beautiful views over the traditional vine lands, but higher rainfall and humidity at the right time of the year, cooler temperatures to retain high natural acidity, and still enough sunshine to fully ripen the grapes.

Our 2003 Abbots Prayer Merlot Cabernet exhibits a rich, concentrated palate with ripe, sweet fruit flavours, intense and complex. Excellent depth and structure, fine-grained tannins and a very long finish.

Expert Reviews

Rating 95 - James Halliday - Published on 20 Jul 2011, Australian Wine Companion

Fragrant, red berry fruits with some accompanying spices on the bouquet; a medium-bodied palate, with elegant, fresh cherry and cassis fruit; very fine tannins run through a great finish and aftertaste.

Winery Profile

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.

Rating 89 - Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate #167, Oct 2006

A blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2003 Abbotts Prayer is fashioned from the cool Adelaide Hills sub-region known as Lenswood. After spending 14 months in oak, it exhibits deep mocha, black cherry, cassis, herb, white chocolate, toasty oak, and spice characteristics. In the mouth, there is a certain rigidity and monolithic style that suggests it is going through an awkward, closed stage, but there is plenty of stuffing and potential underlying the wine’s structure. I would not be surprised to see this effort merit a higher score with another year or two of bottle age.
