Wine Summary Image

Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced.

Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multivineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented,

providing a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage.

"The 50th Commercial Release that may rival the 1998 Bin 28."

"Just like Bin 28s of yore - not for the faint-hearted... fighting above its weight division!"

"This vintage will provide both immediate allure and long-term satisfaction."

Penfolds Chief Winemaker - Peter Gago.

Expert Reviews

Strong purple-red; a full-bodied and rich Bin 28, awash with blackberry and plum fruit, fruitcake and mocha flavours, the tannins plentiful, but soft and ripe, the American oak dextrously handled as ever.

Rating 94 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

A menacing and impenetrable black core.

Aroma

Classic Bin 28 fruits and maturation complexities. Satsuma conserve and a (very) faint cigar box background (oak or fruit ?). Aromas of a basking Sunday Roast and / or simmering Beef Bourgogne, shadowed by

tumeric and dark Calamatta olive.

Palate

Full-bodied. Assertive, but neither bullying with alcohol nor oak. Dense, great texture & layered - all bases covered. Blueberry Barossa fruits exposed - a la RWT! Christmas Cake mix or trifle? Perhaps the suggestion of brandy / custard favours the latter? The density, texture and depth of this wine is testament to the strength of the vintage.

Cellaring Potential

Drink 2011 - 2030+

Food Matching

Black Angus beef fillet, baby carrot, mustard, house sprouted legumes and baby herbs (Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant, Spring Menu 2010).

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Matured in older American oak, the 2008 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz reveals a deep garnet-purple color and expressive notes of ripe cherries, blackberry preserves and crushed blueberries with some hints of baking spices and slightly burnt toast. Rich, ripe, full bodied and generous in the mouth, it has a medium level of rounded tannins, very crisp acid and a long finish. Drinking well now, it should remain good to 2017.

Rating 90 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, eRobertParker.com (FEB/2012)
