Wine Summary Image

The crus of Chapelle-Chambertin are close neighbours to those of Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze. The wines enjoy the same characteristics of solidity, power and fullness, with a licorice hint that differentiates them. Chapelle-Chambertin covers a little more than 5 hectares, and owes its name to the chapel built in 1155 by the monks of the abbey of Bèze (a stone's throw from the Clos de Bèze), which was razed to the ground in the Revolution. Classified as Grand Cru, the appellation produces only red wine. Aromas of red and black berries, notes of black cherry, bitter chocolate, liquorice and truffles: these are the characteristics of this wine, which can be enjoyed young or aged 15 years or more.

Jean-Louis Trapet is an articulate man, at peace in a world where "men are mere mortals". And since wine is all about sharing and transmission, his great-great-grandfather's legacy, founded in 1870, has been kept alive.

Today he takes care of 15 hectares of vineyard, among the best-located in Gevrey. He is merely the custodian of this treasure: three grands crus (Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin and Latricières-Chambertin), two premiers crus (Petite Chapelle and Clos Prieur), Marsannay and Bourgogne.

Since 1995 the entire domain uses biodynamics: free of any harsh practices in the vineyard as well as in the cellars, which respects the natural balance of the wine. This approach is above all based on observation: to protect the vines while monitoring their growth and development. Maturating is a decisive stage at the Trapet domain: once the vinification is finished (with minimum intervention), the wines are taken down to the cellar and put in barrels to mature slowly over the winter months at their own speed.

Expert Reviews

The 2005 Chapelle-Chambertin – from what the Trapet family, but others too, refer to as the warmest, sweetest spot on these rocks – exudes black cherry, licorice, lily flower, and mocha. Rich, creamy, and soft on the palate (particularly for a 2005), but without being overly fat, and with a lightly-cooked aspect to its black fruits yet preserving an infectious juiciness, this offers a veritable welcome mat of a finish. While it will doubtless age positively for a decade or more, it should drink well much sooner.

Also recommended: 2005 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain (86), 2005 Bourgogne Aminima ($25.00; 85), 2005 Marsannay (86).

Young Jean-Louis Trapet evinces an inspiring degree of sincerity and that rarest of human virtues “humbition”. He is clearly determined to return his family’s estate to the celebrated place they occupied on the international stage for much of the late 20th century, and thinks a critical tool is the practice of biodynamics, in which the domaine was recently officially certified. Nature certainly cooperated in 2005 almost regardless of method let alone metaphysics, and this is a promising collection. The wines are not sulfured at all during their elevage, and only minimally at bottling, demanding that the typical taster re-calibrate his or her palate accordingly. - The Wine Advocate

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
