Wine Summary Image

Watkins is a cellar door, winery and vineyards producing "Modern Australian" wines from the Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek. The winery has a focus on quality, producing a considered portfolio of masterful wines to be bottled. The cellar door prides itself on the sense of community, a gathering place of enthusiasts and friends. The vineyards emphasize sustainability, using native flora and fauna and organic practices to engineer minimal impact farming.

The Watkins brand launched in October 2020, building on over 20 years of wine industry history. The Watkins family journey began in viticulture in the 1990s, eventually operating vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, Langhorne Creek, Currency Creek and McLaren Vale. In the 2000s the next generation of Watkins entered the wine industry in various roles, with inevitable returns to the family business in the 2010s. In 2020, Sam (now an award winning winemaker), Josephine and Ben launched the cellar door and bottled brand, to show the world the winemaking craft that we have honed through hard work.

The brand prides itself on the quality of the wines, winning awards and critical acclaim from the first vintage with the 2020 Langhorne Creek Trophy for Best White, Rose or Sparkling for the inaugural release of the Watkins Classic Rose.

The Watkins family operates from its Chandlers Hill winery, which is the largest winery in the Adelaide Hills wine region.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The Watkins Cellar Reserve range takes this special 2016 Currency Creek Cabernet Sauvignon and gives it extended maturation in the winery and completing oak to produce an exceptional wine that is at its best to drink now or within three years.

The intense ruby colour is maturing to a rich garnet. The beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon flavours have begun developing from mint through to berry and forest floor characters, underlaid by a touch of rich cigar box notes.

The mid palate has remained firm through maturation to produce a rich, generous wine that lingers for a long finish. The powerful Cabernet Sauvignon tannins have been barely tamed into approachability, presenting a well-structured wine.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The Watkins family embarked on an incredible journey into the wine industry back in 1997. It all began when David Watkins and Ros Watkins, purchased a plot of land in Currency Creek, South Australia. Their vision was clear from the start: to create a vineyard of unparalleled quality and prestige.

With determination and passion, the Watkins family spent the next 22 years transforming their dream into a thriving and profitable enterprise. They expanded their land holdings, cultivating an impressive 485 hectares of premium vineyards across four renowned regions of South Australia: Adelaide Hills, Currency Creek, Langhorne Creek, and McLaren Vale, alongside business partner at the time, Warren Randall.

In 2019, the Watkins family decided to embark on a new chapter, amicably parting ways with their business partner and incorporating as Watkins. This change paved the way for the next generation to shine: Sam Watkins as the Head Winemaker, Ben Watkins as the Commercial Director, and Jo Watkins as the Brand Director. With their fresh ideas and boundless enthusiasm, the Watkins family's legacy continues to flourish.

Sam Watkins, Head Winemaker, is a true maestro of his craft. With 14 years of experience and a global perspective, he has honed his skills in renowned wine regions worldwide. His expertise lies in capturing the essence of the premium fruit grown in the Watkins' vineyards, thriving in the cool climates of Langhorne Creek and the Adelaide Hills. Nowadays, visitors can experience the magic firsthand at the Watkins Cellar Door, nestled within the family-owned winery in the picturesque Chandlers Hill, South Australia.

Their dedication and hard work have already earned them numerous accolades, even in the early years of their brand's existence. From wine show trophies to prestigious awards bestowed by the likes of Halliday Wine Companion. This is fresh winemaking born from winemaking excellence.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
