VINEYARD REGIONS

Fruit from cooler McLaren Vale sub-regions is balanced against the rich brooding red berry character of grapes from our warmer McMurtrie Road Vineyard on the valley floor.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Hot and dry conditions through Summer resulted in a short, condensed vintage characterised by excellent fruit quality and a reduced yield.

WINEMAKING

Using the Italian ‘Moda Amarone’, whole bunches were dried for one week in open racks under the Cellar Door carport to concentrate the flavours. The partially dried fruit was then crushed into traditional open-topped fermenters with manual pump-over. Open-topped fermentation is at the heart of the JOSEPH red wine style.

Expert Reviews

The 2020 Moda Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is cedary and dry, with a distinctly savory firm character in the mouth. Personally, this taster would prefer slightly less impactful oak, and brighter fruit, but it is crafted in a polished, professional manner that feels very deliberate and high quality. It's preference call here; this is a big, broad wine. The drinking window is conservative. - The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Intense bouquet of concentrated blackcurrant fruit intermingled with characteristic raisin and cigar box notes. Mouth filling palate of rich, lush blueberry wrapped in fine dark cocoa. The palate is silky, poised and just goes on and on, to a gentle finish with lingering cedar oak.

Winery Profile

The Primo Estate story is an Australian journey with an Italian twist. The current range of Primo and JOSEPH wines and extra virgin olive oils is a reflection of this rich heritage.

James Halliday in his 'Wine Atlas of Australia' declares, the Primo Estate approach "is the sort of ingenuity, of daring, which lies outside the imagination of the Old World winemakers and which stands Australia in such good stead."

Robert Parker agrees, adding that "I enjoy Primo Estate's offerings as they are innovative, singular, flavourful, complex wines. These creatively made efforts must be admired for their individuality as much as their bold flavours and personality"

The story begins in 1953 when Primo Grilli arrived in Australia from the Le Marche region of Italy with a vision of growing grapes in this sun soaked new land. Recognising the grape growing potential of South Australia, with warm summers and cooling maritime influences similar to his homeland of Le Marche, Primo planted the family's first vineyard in 1973, just north of Adelaide around a small township called Virginia.

Primo's eldest son, Joseph, studied Oenology at South Australia's legendary Roseworthy College. Joe graduated Dux of his class in 1979 and a new winery was built in Virginia. From his very first vintage as winemaker in 1979, aged just 20, Joseph Grilli sought to create revolutionary wines.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
