Wine Summary Image

James Irvine is the Australian winemaker most strongly associated with Merlot, and his Grand Merlot, first made in 1984, is widely considered the country’s leading example. Over the years it has won a number of awards in Europe, often in competition with the best of St-Emilion and Pomerol. Winemaker Joanne Irvine focuses on getting Eden Valley fruit fully ripe while keeping yields low.

The wine is matured for 12-24 months in French (Allier) oak, valued for its spiciness.

Typically, plum and cherry aromas lead into a deep, complex, red-fruited palate (especially raspberry), with leather and tobacco notes, firm but fine, velvety tannins and spicy savouriness.

The wine generally benefits from decanting up to four hours before serving.

Expert Reviews

1994 - Medium to full red; a scented, fragrant cedary bouquet is followed by a palate in which sweet cedar and vanilla oak and soft, silky tannins produce a seductive wine, with fruit an incidental extra. - Wine Companion. 1992 - The nose is superb. Magnificent cherry, mulberry, plum and delicate cedar oak in the background, with overtones of liquorice and confectionary. This is superb ripe fruit. The palate reflects the intensity of flavours - with ripe plum dominating and wonderful liquorice and confectionary counter points. The spicy cedar oak is subdued, there to add some structure and contribute to complexity with also a hint of cigar box. Very fine grained dry tannins and exceptionally long mulberry spice and confectionary aftertaste.
