Wine Summary Image

Eight Songs for A Mad King’ was one of Peter Lehmann’s favourite vocal ensemble musical works, loved for its soft harmonies, inspiring PL to emulate their art in a wine unlike anything else he had made before.

8 Songs Shiraz was first made in 1996 with the aim of producing a decisively soft and stylish style of Barossa wine. Sourced from some of the oldest, low-yielding vineyards across the Barossa, this wine has been matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads. The winemaking team seamlessly integrates the rich fruit and velvety tannins to create a distinctly elegant wine with an abundance of mocha chocolate and dark plum fruit characters.

Winery Profile

In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label.

As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady.

Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

As well as purchasing grapes from about 185 local independent growers, Peter Lehmann Wines has its own vineyards, which produce about 2% of its requirements. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, and these regions encompass a myriad of sub-districts.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce a wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines.

Our wines are created from grapes purchased from about 165 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of our growers’ families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Stonewell, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
