Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Vat 1 Semillon only ever comes from the oldest and best blocks.

The vines are all dry grown, on their own roots, and date back to 1923.

The nose shows a lifted floral character with a hint of citrus that is more intense than in recent years.

The palate is grand cru-like in the sense that it has great depth and power yet maintains its elegance through the finish, with a softer acid profile giving the wine great balance.

A classic Vat 1 with the exceptional length and balance only seen in great vintages.

Vat 9 Shiraz is sourced from the best parcels on the Tyrrell Estate, ‘Ashmans’.

This Vat 9 blend comprises of Shiraz from our Short Flat, NVC, and 8 Acres Vineyards.

These vines have a minimum age of 50 years, with the oldest planted in 1892, and are grown in red clay soils over limestone.

One of the most intense colours of the 2023 release; glossy, bright, and dense.

Captivating and complex aromatics of dark, sweet fruits; mulberry highlights and spice from the oak.

The palate is clean, rich, and velvety; with length and texture that is signature Vat 9.

Impeccable balance and approachability yet built for a long life in the cellar.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell's Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.

Today, Tyrrell's are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria.

Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future.

Tyrrell's Wines was awarded Winery Of The Year by James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010.

Provenance; “Place of origin; derivation”

  • The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used for Artworks, Antiques, and Wine.
  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
