Expert Reviews

The 2005 Shiraz “Emily’s Paddock” offers greater aromatic complexity, more structure, and gobs of supple, ripe, sweet fruit. Give it 5-7 years to blossom and drink it through 2025.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Another definitive Emily's with its depth of colour, having the typical creaminess of new French barriques melded into a beautiful framed wine of elegant mouth feel, great length and a minerality from the shallower Cambrian soil over sedimentary rock. Abundant natural acidity and lots of ripe, supple tannins enable a very long life but it is still approachable now.On release

Medium deep colour. Minty/ redcurrant/ ginger. Ginger malt/ red currant flavours with fresh minty notes, fine slinky dry loose knit but very dry tannins. Finishes quite minerally and dry. 2010-2020.

Rating 90 - Andrew Caillard MW (MAY/2007)

Winery Profile

The un-irrigated, insanely low yielding 3.2 hectare Emily’s Paddock, planted with Shiraz and a few rows of Cabernet Franc, lies on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The Cambrian derived solids of friable red brown gravelly loams run in a unique thin north-south non-continuous strip between two parallel fault lines. These are well drained soils with high levels of iron and good water holding properties.

A laissez-faire winemaking approach is central to the style. During fermentation the wine is regularly pumped over to achieve supple tannins structures. The wine is matured for 14 months in a mixture of new and old French oak (mostly Alliers oak). Emily’s paddock show power and refinement, with ripe fruit matching well-handled oak.

Similar colour to Georgia's; a firmer structure, resting on slightly more evident tannins, and the fruit more towards black cherry and blackberry; a long, balanced finish.
