Kilikanoon Baudinet Mataro 2015 (6 x 750mL) Clare Valley, SA

Description:

Trillian’s Hill is one of the highest and therefore coolest vineyard sites in the Clare Valley with an altitude of 550 metres at its highest point. The mild dry climate and cool nights during the ripening period are perfectly suited to the Mataro variety.

Fruit was picked in the coolness of early morning at optimal ripeness and flavour concentration. Fermented in an open fermenter for seven days prior to basket pressing into seasoned French oak hogsheads for 18 months maturation. Mataro is primarily used as a component in our GSM blends, however, in exceptional years this variety shows a completeness and personality that is worthy of its own singular wine. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Expert Reviews

From the Trillians Vineyard, open-fermented, 7 days on skins, matured for 18 months in used French hogsheads. It's soft, rich and ripe, and won't change much over the years to come. - James Halliday

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Appearance

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

Nose

An unmistakeable Mataro nose of wild olive, charcuterie, dark cherries and tar, beautifully underpinned by charry French oak.

Palate

The perfectly poised palate, one that plays the primary fruit characters of dark cherries, roast meats and tar right alongside the fine-boned tannins, spicy oak and lingering acid in an engaging and persistent finish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.
