Expert Reviews

99 Points | Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com

Very attractive blueberry, bracken and red-plum aromas with cassis and violets. Some rose, red-cherry and fresh, earthy notes. The palate has an immaculately concentrated feel with measured shape and unwaveringly pure red-plum and blueberry flavors. The tannins are seamless, fine and vividly defined. Stunning length here. This vineyard was planted in 1879. (Nov 2020)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell's Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.

Today, Tyrrell's are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria.

Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future.

Tyrrell's Wines was awarded Winery Of The Year by James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010.

Right up there with the 2014 release, for me, an outstanding red release epic in its texture, purity, delicacy, elegance. Still in that zone since last seeing late 2020, the wine sweet cherry, floral characters, faint brown spice. The palate so satiny, so long, tightened on sleekest, lightest but authority of tannins. Almost a top flight Beaujolais feel here, but trumping most for character and finesse. Magnificent drinking. Hard to think of better red wine from Australia. (Apr 2021)
