Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer: 96 points – "An aristocratic wine that carries on the dynasty of the even-numbered vintage reign of 389, the king of the Bins. Shiraz leads out with signature black plum, pepper and dark chocolate flavours, while cabernet brings up the rear with crunchy blackcurrants, tobacco and capsicum fruit. That classic 389 backbone of steely, firm, fine tannins will ensure it holds the throne for decades."

Rating 95 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (11 August 2011) Strong purple-crimson; there is a cohesive element to the Bin releases of ’08, all showing very good fruit concentration and balance, as with the blackberry and blackcurrant flavours and tannins of this wine. Excellent cellaring potential.

Rating 91 - Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com #199 (February 2012) Deep garnet-purple colored the 2008 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is a little restrained on the nose, giving appealing notes of mocha, cloves and chocolate box over a core of blueberries and kirsch. Medium to full bodied, it’s dense and taut in the mouth with a firm structure of chewy tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and purely fruited. Approachable now, it should give pleasure to 2018+.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
