My dad always said how much he loved drinking the Cabernet/Shiraz blends that were going around in the 60’s and 70’s. Not too many folks put these wines in the cellar back then because they were pretty easy to slip into straight away. Luckily, Dad put enough away for me to get a try of a few old rippers with a couple of decades of age on them which was the motivation for this traditional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from vines grown on our hand-tended vineyard in Vine Vale. We’ve blended these two varieties together after open fermentation, basket pressing and ageing in old casks in the family winery – just like they were made back then.

Winery Tasting Notes

Rich bouquet shows potpourri, some herbals with blackberry, plum and currents. The palate is lively and fresh with currants, plums and faint herbal tones from the Cabernet. Soft tannins give way to a fresh, vibrant finish. Hard to stop at just one glass!

Winery Profile

We believe that we are custodians of the land. Our job is to care for it as best we can and pass it down from one generation to the next. We also pass down the traditions that were taught to us by our forebears. We tend the vineyard by hand, and more recently as our winery has grown, we adhere to traditional methods in the cellar. Our focus is on traditional Barossa varieties and blends, however we are not afraid to give different varieties a go as Australia’s wine industry is still in its infancy. We are caretakers of the land, shepherding our vines through the seasons and the wine they produce through our cellar.

Our vineyard is in Vine Vale; our terroir is deep white sand over red clay. We believe that Vine Vale is the most versatile and consistent grape growing district on the Barossa Valley floor.

Our wines have a unique character with balance and structure. They are fruit driven because we believe in our vineyard and we want you to taste the unique flavours in the wines of this particular site. Our range of wines has an obvious house style because they are all made and grown the same way in the same soil. Our wines honestly represent vintage. Rusden is a “vigneron” in the true sense of the word. We grow the grapes, make and bottle the wine and sell the wine ourselves to our many and varied restaurant friends and loyal mail order customers all over Australia.

We are deeply humbled by the support and passion we are so blessed to receive from the many people who love drinking Rusden wine.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
