Tempranillo is an intriguing variety, originally from Spain but showing its versatility in many newer grape growing regions

We have been working with this innovative grower for many years. These bush vines are planted on hungry stony soil on a ridge top in the heart of Frankland. Each vintage has seen these vines edge towards the better balance of canopy and fruit and the great 2018 vintage has been the best yet.

The Tempranillo fruit was handpicked and destemmed into an open fermenter for wild fermentation. After handplunging for 10 days on skins the wine was pressed and matured in older 500L puncheons. No adds, finings or filtration were made to this wine apart from a little sulphur dioxide.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2018 Extreme Ways Tempranillo has red fruits: cherries, raspberry, mulberry and earthy fresh leather complexity. There is also underlying cardamom and some white flowers. Rich and generous on the palate the 2018 Extreme Ways is a product of perfect ripening in a great Frankland vintage. The succulence is balance by fine graphitic tannins with a gentle drying dustiness on the long finish.
