Thomson Estate Double Pass Shiraz 2021 (12x 750mL) South Australia

Description:

1838 was the year Walter Thomson, with wife Jane, arrived in Australia and established a winemaking tradition. Faithful to his approach, our estate grown parcels are carefully tended by our vignerons to create wines of great intensity.

Double Pass™ is the process of creating more flavour, richness, and complexity from the fruit we grow. The First Pass is harvested from estate grown fruit at optimum ripeness that creates a lifted and fragrant Shiraz with red fruits and spice. The Second Pass is harvested from Vine Dried Shiraz which has been left on the vines to develop dark fruit and rich flavours. We combine the wines from the First and Second Pass to create the Double Pass™ which is a stunningly rich and balanced wine with fresh red and black fruits combined with spice and fruitcake aromas.

WINEMAKING

The 2021 vintage saw cooler than average temperatures with no heat waves. Fruit ripening was gradual and even producing beautifully balanced fruit bursting with flavour. At each picking time the grapes are destemmed and transferred to temperature controlled fermenters where daily pump overs assist in extracting the intense colour and flavours from skins. Once fermentation is complete the wine is pressed off skins and transferred to a tank for maturation. The blending of the first pass wine with the second pass is undertaken to create the Double Pass, perfectly balanced wine.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

COLOUR

Deep purple body with red hue.

AROMA

Mulberty, strawberry and black cherry fill the nose. Additional spicey oak adds complexity to the aroma.

PALATE

This full-bodied red wine has strawberry and black cherry fruit flavours. The ample fruit combines with subtle cinnamon bark and coffee expressed from the oak on the mid palate, which all combine with the soft tannins and medium acid to balance the finish. Perfect to pair with Moroccan meatball and chickpea bake, or lamb cutlets grilled on the barbeque. Vegan friendly.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Experienced wine exporters, vignerons and domestic wine sellers. The Byrne difference is quality focused, innovative and estate grown wines from grape to glass.

Celebrating 60 years and 4 generations, the Byrne family range of wines express our dedication to sustainability and land regeneration practices, with our ethos to minimise harm and maximise benefits to the environment.

From the banks of the Murray River in which our vineyard grows, our prized estate wines reflect the love that goes into our land, delivering richness and complexity into each glass.

It all began almost half a century ago when the first vines were planted in a spot handpicked for its stony soils over the limestone base. Combine that with the warm embrace of a dry climate and generous sunshine, and you have the perfect recipe for grape varieties bursting with flavour and resilience.
