Wine Summary Image

A classic, full-bodied red that balances rich tradition with a vibrant, modern edge.

Crafted from vines grown on the Heysen Estate property—notably featuring the famous Kalimna 3C Shiraz clone used in Penfolds Grange—this flagship bottling benefits from Whistler's transition toward organic and biodynamic vineyard practices.

Aromas: A deep nose showing dark plum, blueberry compote, and black pepper, woven together with notes of freshly roasted coffee beans, savory spices, and a touch of earth.

Palate: Rich and voluptuous. It floods the palate with intense blue fruits and blackberry preserve, layered with hints of dark chocolate and anise.

Structure: Deeply concentrated but showing excellent vibrancy. It was matured for 20 months in a combination of American (70%) and French (30%) oak barrels, resulting in smooth, silky tannins and a beautifully rounded finish.

Expert Reviews

95 Pts - Halliday Rating

As with the other shiraz across the various tiers at this address, this strives for aromatic vibrancy and sass across the palate. And achieves it: blue fruits, nori and salami are woven by a thread of peppery acidity, tying fore to aft. The mid-palate could use a little more stuffing. Just a bit. Otherwise, this is a delicious wine of aromatic complexity and textural intrigue, the 20 months in 70% American and 30% French oak righteous and just, all in service of pleasure. - Ned Goodwin MW, 11 July 2021.

Winery Profile

Grape growing has been part of the Pfeiffer family way of life for four generations, beginning with Josh’s great grandfather, Albert Heinrich Pfeiffer, who owned a vineyard in the Riverland region of South Australia. Albert would spend many hours in the vines with his son Hubert, working the vineyard in bare feet with his faithful Clydesdale, Bloss, before harvesting the grapes and selling them to local producers.

Hubert Irving Pfeiffer, grandfather to Josh, soon followed in his father’s footsteps moving his family to a vineyard in Loxton. Hubert enjoyed wandering through the vines with his son Martin talking to, and training both the vines and his young pupil, just as his father before him.More than 80 years on, Josh’s father, Martin continued the tradition at Whistler Wines by planting 5 hectares of Shiraz (Kalimna 3C, 1654 and BVRC30 clones) in 1994. In 1997, Martins brother, Chris joined the business and enabled further growth of the vineyard, planting a further hectare of Shiraz (BVRC30 clone), 2 hectares of Merlot (D3V14 clone), 1.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon (D9V12 clone) and 1.5 hectares of Semillon (BVRC32 clone) . In 2001, a further 2 hectares of Grenache (BVRC139 clone), 2 hectares of Mataro (BVRC138) and a hectare of Riesling (BVRC31 clone) were planted to give us a total of 15 hectares on our Heysen Estate vineyard.

Today Martin is showing his son Josh the art of grape growing, handing down the knowledge from the previous generations to ensure that the skills learned are not lost.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
