Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Sourced from bush vines planted in 1889. Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark crimson red hue. The nose exudes ripe black raspberry and liquorice aromas followed by some dark plum, earth and spice. Medium bodied the palate is filled with juicy flavours of spicy ripe dark raspberries, black cherries and liquorice followed by a touch of earthy leather with the spiciness persisting right through to the long finish. Supple mouthfeel with ever so slightly dryish but very fine grained tannins. Long black raspberry, liquorice and spicy earthy leather aftertaste.

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
