Winery Profile

Colin and Kay Andrews, owners of Jirra Wines at Jeir Station are hands on in their vineyard which surrounds the historic Jeir Station Homestead. They both enjoy working together in the vineyard taking on the many seasonal tasks, from the watering of the vines, to the mulching, to the netting of the vines to protect the grapes from the maurading birds.

Colin and Kay always look forward to vintage with the harvest being an exciting time. The picking of the grapes and then the crush and then going to the tasting bench is the end result of their work in the vineyard throughout the year.

The Terroir of Jeir Station

Soil testing reveals that Jeir Station has the most fertile soil in the Canberra District grape growing region. The limestone outcrops at Jeir Station are the perfect base for growing grapes which is why the property was considered to be such prime agricultural land in the last hundred years or so.

The micro-climate of Jeir Station is the coolest within the Canberra District G.I. (Geographic Indication). This means that that the Jirra grapes at Jeir Station are the last to be picked in the region. Being the last grapes to be picked, demonstrates the commitment to patience by Colin and Kay and their search for the best possible wine from their vineyard. As the grapes ripen late and with the resultant improvement in the quality of the fruit, some wonderful wines are then produced under the Jirra label at Jeir Station.

Winemakers

The winemaking team is Rob Howell and Greg Gallagher, two of the most experienced winemakers in the Canberra District. Both winemakers live close to Jeir Station and understand the local climate and grape growing conditions very well.

The Vineyard

The viticulture team is led by Geoff Carter who oversees the care and management of the vineyard. Good wine begins in the vineyard and Geoff leads the way with the many tasks including pruning and spraying.
