Wine Summary Image

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1993, Charles Heidsieck offered the Blanc des Millénaires in its prestigious 1983 vintage. It is period in which the desire to create a style and the expertise in producing Blanc de blancs champagnes was at its height (the oldest being from 1949). Since then, the House has only unveiled four vintages from its highly lauded Blanc de Blancs: 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2004.

Expert Reviews

95 Points - Robert M. Parker, Jr., Published 01 May, 2019

Disgorged in November 2017 after 13 years on the lees, the stunning 2004 Blanc des Millénaires is a worthy successor to the 1995. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of green apple, pear, brioche and fresh pastry that are framed by a lovely smoky, autolytic top note, the wine is full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with ripe acids, superb depth at the core and a textural, vinous quality while remaining very classical in profile. The finish is long and expansive. A blend of Chardonnay from Cramant, Avize, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Vertus, it saw nine grams per liter dosage. This is a terrific blanc de blancs from Charles Heidsieck that has a long and glorious future ahead of it. Sadly, the price of this cuvée has finally caught up with the quality.

Winery Tasting Notes

TO THE EYE

A shimmering golden robe highlighted by delicate effervescence

TO THE NOSE

Elegant nose of lemon, apple blossoms, salted butter and almonds aling with a toasted buttery nuance of crème anglaise.

ON THE PALATE

An inital palate of fresh citrus gives the wine a taut crispness, followed by a gradually persistant force and intensity. The mouthfeel is dynamic and perfectly structured with a long and well-rounded finish. The Blanc de Millenaires style far surpasses the 2004 vintage. The rich texture is rooted in a vinatge still young and taut: the refined elegant effervescence reveals a still juvenile minerality.

Winery Profile

Charles Heidsieck may be both the best and the most famous of the three Hiedsieck domains, but it was the last of the three to get into the game. It was in 1851, sixty-six years after Florens-Louis Heidsieck first laid the foundation for the Heidsieck clan that Charles-Camille Heidsieck established the domain. In 1857, Charles-Camille made his first trip to America. There he was quickly dubbed “Champagne Charlie” by the Yanks and grew to be so well known that his name appeared in music hall songs performed around the country.

For a while Charles Heidsieck was owned by Henriot, but it was sold in 1985 to the Rémy-Cointreau Group. Daniel Thibault was Chef de caves here, and at Piper-Heidsieck, prior to his premature death in February 2002. He is missed by the entire wine world. Before the incomparable Thibault came on to the scene, Heidsieck owned no vineyards of their own. Today they own thirty hectares at Ambonnay, Bouzy and Oger.

The non-vintage Champagne Brut Resérve Mis en Cave is currently among the best on the market, and the vintage wine is always a joy to follow. The decision to close down Champagne Charlie and to substitute Blanc de Millénaires for the prestige Champagne has been praised by many.

All the wines are beautifully toasted. It will not be an easy task for Daniel Thibault's successor to fill the gap left by this winemaker who is already a legend. The 96 is particularly interesting since it was so inferior when it was released, but is so wonderfully roasted and so delightfully complex now.
