Winery Tasting Notes

A plush soft palate displaying red plum, raspberry fruits and spice with vanilla oak, the tannins are fine grained and the wine has a long lingering finish. The nose displays lovely ripe red plum and spice (nutmeg, cinnamon) with vanilla notes from barrel fermentation and maturation.

Vintage 2014 in Coonawarra was one of the longest on record. The growing season was long with a good moist start; flowering commenced in November, followed by a dry Summer with warm days and cool nights ‚ perfect for development of colour and flavour. The ripening period for the red varieties was cool and slow; harvest of red varieties began in late March with classic varietal fruit flavours, good colour and fine grained tannins.

The fruit was machine picked, destemmed and crushed prior to inoculation with a selected yeast. The wine was fermented on skins for a period of 7 days in stainless steel fermenters. The wine was pumped over twice daily to ensure optimum extraction of colour and flavour. The wine was then pressed off skins while still slightly sweet and pumped to new and used French, American and Hungarian oak barrels to complete primary and malolactic fermentation. On completion of primary and malolactic fermentation the wine was racked off its lees, the barrels cleaned and the wine pumped back to the same barrels for 16 months barrel maturation with one more racking in the meantime to aid wine development.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

t was 1893 that an English sea captain, lured inland by the pull of the earth, purchased a block of land right in the heart of Coonawarra. With its rich Terra Rossa soil, Captain Henry Stentiford would become a key ingredient in the region’s history as custodian of some of its founding vines – vines that still produce wine to this day.

Some 50 years later in 1950 Eric Brand (a baker by trade) and his wife Nancy Redman acquired the same 24 hectare property with just over 2 hectares of Shiraz and named it ‘The Laira’ Vineyard in honour of Captain Stentiford’s favourite Clipper which bore the same name.

For the next 16 years Eric worked as a ‘Blocker’ – the name given to Coonawarra landholders who sold their grapes to other wineries in the region. That is until 1966 – armed with an antique basket press, a must pump and 4 concrete fermenters, and blessed with the best Coonawarra weather of the decade – Eric produced his very first vintage under the Brand’s Laira name. Tellingly, Eric would go on to become the First Patron of Coonawarra for his contribution to the region. 2016 marked the 50th Anniversary of the release.

The Brand family continue to keep a watchful eye over Brand’s Laira with Eric’s grandson Trent at the helm of the viticultural team, working side by side with Peter Weinberg our Chief Winemaker, now in his 18th vintage. Today the brand proudly offers an outstanding range of wines, including our Flagship One Seven One Cabernet – recently awarded Best Coonawarra Cabernet at the International Wine Challenge 2017 and the highly awarded Blockers Cabernet.
