Wine Summary Image

This wine forms part of Seppelt’s prized Drumborg Vineyard Range, sourced from the mature, cool-climate Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard in South-West Victoria’s Henty Region. Planted in 1964 by Karl Seppelt and swept by icy Winds from the Southern Ocean, it is one of the Southern-most vineyards of mainland Australia.

Pinot Meunier was planted at Drumborg in 1966 to be used as a component of Premium Sparkling Wine, however it can produce very interesting and delicious dry table wines reminiscent of Pinot Noir. Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard Pinot Meunier is a unique example of this variety and is amongst only a handful of wines made in this fashion in Australia.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday

96 Points

Destemmed into small open fermenters plus some whole bunches, 8 days on skins, matured in French barriques (15% new) for 9 months, includes 10% pinot noir. Brilliantly clear colour; an entrancing bouquet of red fruits and spices, the slightly savoury palate building complexity. A [near?] perfect meunier.

Light crimson. Fragrant pure strawberry, red cherry, redcurrant aromas with camomile, herb garden notes. Silky smooth wine with pure strawberry red cherry fruits, fine slinky textures and underlying ginger, vanilla oak. Finishes soft and lacy with persistent mineral acidity. Light in colour but very expressive early drinking style with plentiful red fruits, mid-palate viscosity and surprising density.

The perfect exemplar of the unique personality of meunier, there is a soft, supple approachability to this wine, even at low alcohol from the cool Drumborg vineyard. It's brimming with spice, fruit cake and plump poached strawberries, with very soft acidity and virtually no tannin to speak of.
