Wine Summary Image

Vinification

Processing started with a 3 day cold soak, then a 5-6 day ferment at 24-26C.

The vineyard is on heavy clay soil which gives great fruit concentration with tannin structure and direction.

The oak regime for this wine is 100% French, no new oak.

Winemaker Comments

Hunter Valley winemakers had the rare joy of 3 consecutive dry vintages when the grapes of 2019 started coming off the vines. The hot vintage of 2018 ended with 100mm of rain in February and then 120mm in March. Our usual dry winter prevailed and then a small amount of Spring/early Summer rain. The temperatures started to rise in late December hitting 39C on 29th signalling a very hot New Year. For January 2019, Brokenwood saw only 3 days under 30C and 19 days over 35C. In a flash back to early February 2017, there was a run of days, 15th to 19th, of over 40C and the month closed out with 43.5C on the 26th. The old vines of Graveyard were harvested in the second week of February in pristine condition. An effortless high quality vintage.

Food Pairing

Pairs well with Osso bucco or slow roasted lamb shoulder.

Expert Reviews

Gold & 96 Pts - Halliday Rating

A stellar wine boasting an intensity of flavour, palate-staining levels of extract and a forensic precision to the tannins that forces one to swish the wine about the mouth while chewing every ounce of nourishment from it. Subdued at first, before 2019's ripe kit of black cherry melds with lilac florals and a long trail of pepper, Indian spice mix and charcuterie flavours. A venerable wine in the making. - Ned Goodwin MW, 13 August 2021.

Winery Tasting Notes

Bright mid density colour with purple hues just adding to the appeal.

The use of large format French oak allows the red spice and bramble fruit of Hunter Shiraz to shine.

Initial palate is very supple and complete, giving a lovely flow from start to finish.

The importance of acidity can never be underestimated as this underpins the structure and carry.

An impressive wine, which is a great follow on from the 2018 vintage. Subtle but powerful.

Winery Profile

At nearly 40 years young, Brokenwood Wines, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, can lay claim to not only an iconic vineyard with the Graveyard Vineyard but to the preservation of a wine fraternity that proudly has as its mission statement, 'to make great wine and have fun'.

The original land that was to become the Cricket Pitch Vineyard was purchased in 1970 and planted immediately to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968, was bought in 1978 and by the mid 1980s was producing a premium Single Vineyard wine. The first Langton's Classification of Premium Australian Wine was launched in 1993 and the Graveyard Shiraz was then, and remains, the highest-placed Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The Hunter Valley is renowned for its dry table wines of Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood's production of these is further supported by premium grapes from as far afield as Orange, Beechworth and McLaren Vale.

Today, Brokenwood boasts an impressive array of premium quality wines, sourced from 'all the right regions, for all the right reasons', from the Graveyard Shiraz to the Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cricket Pitch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.

“Our philosophy is to produce wine that focuses on the unique regional characteristics of the Hunter Valley and premium wine regions throughout Australia.” Iain Riggs, Chief Winemaker & Managing Director, Brokenwood Wines.
