Wine Summary Image

In Beechworth, two things really stand out, the consistent high quality of the grapes as the vines approach 20 years, and the stability of the weather. Very good winter rain was received in 2016 followed by a fine dry summer. Picking got underway two weeks later than in 2016.

Expert Reviews

"The 20+ year old vines are producing fruit so fine and elegant that I expect many might mistake this for premier cru Burgundy in a blind tasting."

95 Points

Beechworth can’t be far off earning a reputation for Chardonnay as prestigious as that of the Yarra Valley and Mornington if recent tastings from the region are anything to go by. This wine is a case in point. The fruit for this stunner comes from a Beechworth vineyard planted in 1999. The 20+ year old vines are producing fruit so fine and elegant that I expect many might mistake this for premier cru Burgundy in a blind tasting. The fruit aromas are pristine and delicate – grapefruit, lemon zest and white peach. Barrel fermented in 30% new oak shows up as a silky vanilla-scented cream. In the background is a lovely fresh hay and river pebble minerality. Such brightness on the palate with lifted pink grapefruit slices and lots of white nectarine; actually that undersells it, it’s a whole orchard of gently ripening stone fruit. Vibrant acidity and a delicate seashell salinity promise this has a long and remarkable life ahead of it.

Winery Tasting Notes

Medium colour with excellent purple hues. On release at 12 months of age, aromas are still quite fruit driven with lifted charry oak. A serious young Pinot Noir with fragrant red cherry, toasty oak, and wholebunch aromas. Soft entry to the palate, with red fruit characters supported by fine, ripe tannins and fresh acidity. Oak is noticeable at this early stage but it adds plenty of complexity and length. A Pinot Noir that will age well over the medium term.

Winery Profile

At nearly 40 years young, Brokenwood Wines, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, can lay claim to not only an iconic vineyard with the Graveyard Vineyard but to the preservation of a wine fraternity that proudly has as its mission statement, 'to make great wine and have fun'.

The original land that was to become the Cricket Pitch Vineyard was purchased in 1970 and planted immediately to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968, was bought in 1978 and by the mid 1980s was producing a premium Single Vineyard wine. The first Langton's Classification of Premium Australian Wine was launched in 1993 and the Graveyard Shiraz was then, and remains, the highest-placed Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The Hunter Valley is renowned for its dry table wines of Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood's production of these is further supported by premium grapes from as far afield as Orange, Beechworth and McLaren Vale.

Today, Brokenwood boasts an impressive array of premium quality wines, sourced from 'all the right regions, for all the right reasons', from the Graveyard Shiraz to the Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cricket Pitch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.

“Our philosophy is to produce wine that focuses on the unique regional characteristics of the Hunter Valley and premium wine regions throughout Australia.” Iain Riggs, Chief Winemaker & Managing Director, Brokenwood Wines.

This was a vintage that required kid gloves and an almost hand to hand combat with the weather thanks to its pesky rain events. But it’s turned out well. This is sourced from Beechworth in Victoria and has always provided an exceptional source of Pinot Noir. There’s an earthy cherry character on the nose with a touch of vanillin oak. The palate is tight and firm with keen sinewy tannins and a decent lick of oak to hold its line before finishing very long. A wine with structure and poise for cellaring.
