Wine Summary Image

2003 will always be a memorable vintage due to the heatwave in the Bordeaux region and in the country generally. A two-week period spell of scorching heat sud-denly arrived in August, with temperatures rising above 40°C. Rainfall was very low throughout the vines' cycle (555 mm between October 2002 and September 2003, compared to an average of 850 mm) but the soil remained relatively cool and the vines did not suffer from a lack of water.

Our work in the vineyard had to be adapted to deal with these exceptional conditions. Leaf removal operations were thus reduced in order to protect the vines from the scalding effect of the heat.

Fortunately, water reserves in the soil and more moderate temperatures from the start of September enabled the ripening process to be completed. weather in 2003 saw an exceptional heat wave in the first half of August with temperatures exceeding 40°C, together with low rainfall throughout the growth cycle.

100 Points Robert Parker: The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate's great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it ex-hibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedar-wood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for 20-25 years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage - make no mistake about that.

These are two great successes in this vintage that have aged well and surprised me by their intensity and overall complexity.

Brand Profile Image

A first growth in the Médoc region of Bordeaux. The vineyard, to the north of the small town of Pauillac and adjoining Ch Mouton-Rothschild, was probably planted in the last third of the 17th century. Inherited in 1716 by the Ségurs, who also owned Ch Latour, it was sold in 1784 to Pierre de Pichard, an extremely rich president of the Bordeaux Parlement who perished on the scaffold. The estate was confiscated and sold as public property in 1799 to a Dutch consortium which in 1803 resold it to a Dutch grain merchant and supplier to Napoleon's armies, Ignace-Joseph Vanlerberghe. When he fell on hard times, he resold it to his former wife in order to avoid its falling into a creditor's hands. Perhaps for the same reason, or to avoid splitting it up under French inheritance laws, in 1821 she apparently sold it to a London banker, Sir Samuel Scott, for 1 million francs. He and then his son were the nominal owners for over 40 years. But when the real proprietor Aimé Vanlerberghe died without issue in 1866, the family decided to sell it and pay the fines owed because of the concealment. In 1868, after a stiff contest with a Bordeaux syndicate, it was knocked down to Baron James de rothschild of the Paris bank, for 4.4 million francs, including part of the Carruades vineyard. Baron James died in the same year and the Château has remained in the family ever since. Baron Eric de Rothschild took over direction of the property from his uncle Baron Élie in 1975. In the famous 1855 classification, Lafite was placed first of the premiers crus, although there is controversy as to whether the order was alphabetical or by rank. Yet, as Christie's auctions in the 1960s and 1970s of 19th-century British country mansion cellars showed, in Britain Lafite was nearly always the favoured first growth.

The Château itself is a 16th-century manor. The vineyard, one of the largest in the Haut-Médoc, was 103 ha iin 2005 with an encépagement of 71 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 3 per cent Cabernet Franc, 25 per cent Merlot, and 1 per cent Petit Verdot. Annual production is about 45,000 cases, of which about a third may be the second wine, called Carruades de Lafite but not restricted to wine produced on the plateau in the vineyard known as Les Carruades.

Colour: Fine, bright, young, vivid and purple edged.Nose: Hugely perfumed and ex-otic. No question that this comes from a hot year. The oak is perfectly integrated and the wine has good freshness, which was difficult to achieve with such heat. Quite spicy and with perfumed red/black fruits. Palate: Intense, concentrated and rich. Particularly so for Lafite who is classically the epitome of restraint and refinement. There is lovely purity of very ripe fruit, which has remained vibrant. None the les it will mature quite quickly because of the great ripeness. An opulent wine and a delicious one but in no way a classical Bordeaux, Pauillac or Lafite.
