Wine Summary Image

Cullen is one of the pioneers of the Margaret River and produces some of Australia's best Cabernet based wine. The wine is crammed with rich cassis fruit and oak with layers and layers of fruit framed by ripe, tight tannins. The finish is long and elegant.. From one of Australia's best Cabernet producers.

Perhaps Cullen's best-known wine, this blend was recently included in the prestigious Langton Classification of Australian Wines. The vines planted in 1971 are 30 years old. On average the yields are around two tons per acre, or 26 hectolitres per hectare, giving great concentration to the wine. They are grown on the Scott Henry trellising system, which yields grapes with ripe tannins and flavours. This wine is typically a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The varieties are vinified separately and matured in French oak for 18 months. The result is a deeply coloured wine with great depth of flavour, fine grain tannins and outstanding cellaring potential.

Expert Reviews

96 points, Halliday Wine Companion

Vanya Cullen only knows how to make great wine, here juggling cabernet sauvignon (75%), merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and petit verdot. In archetypal Cullen style, it has a backbone of ripe but persistent tannins to the array of black fruit flavours, which have the density and intensity to easily carry the wine through to its very long plateau of maturity.

Winery Tasting Notes

Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson purple hue. Perfumed nose, with very spicy top note, delivering an impressive lift – aroma of violets, blackcurrant and cassis. The palate is firmly structured – this is possibly the most tight knit of the Cullen Cabernets that we’ve seen. The fine dry tannins are dominant and run right through the wine into the aftertaste. The blackcurrant and cassis flavours take a back seat for the time being – this is a wine that needs years to evolve.

Winery Profile

Winemaking began on the Cullen property in Margaret River less than 40 years ago. Studies in South Western Australia conducted in the early 1960Â?s showed that Margaret River had some special qualities. The climate was particularly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr John Gladstones, Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Willyabrup in 1966. The encouraging results of this led to the planting of 18acres of vines on the sheep and cattle farm in 1971, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978. Cullen Wines has since evolved into an estate specialising in single vineyard, premium quality wines focussed on wine integrity, rather than rapid expansion.
