The name Dog Point dates back to the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. These were the days where, due to a lack of fences, boundary riders used boundary-keeping dogs to protect the local flocks of sheep.

Expert Reviews

BOB CAMPBELL MW

96 Points

Deliciously fruit pinot noir with plum, dark cherry, anise, spice and nutty oak flavours among the more obvious descriptors. A dense wine with underlying power and obvious potential but dangerously drinkable now. This must be one of Marlborough's most consistently top reds. And it's organic.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep ruby in colour.

Bouquet: Bright, lifted, red fruit driven with Marlborough's hallmark spiciness complimented by dried herb, smokey and meaty notes in the background.

Palate: A juicy and plush Pinot Noir with pure red berry flavours. The wines cleansing acidity and fine, soft tannins are evident, characteristic of Marlborough's clay based Southern Valley soils.

Food match: Duck and other game birds, red meats, mushroom dishes

Cellaring: Seven to ten years.

Winery Profile

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy.

Our philosophy is total involvement by the partners from the vineyard through the winemaking process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines.

Marlborough's Wairau Valley is the major grape growing region of New Zealand, a confined geographical area at the northern tip of the South Island. Abundant sunshine, low rainfall and cool autumn nights characterise our long growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich array of vibrant fruit flavours.

Fruit for our wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. These older well-established vines situated on free draining silty clay loams are supplemented with fruit from closely planted hillside vines with a clay loam influence.

JAMES SUCKLING'S TOP 100 WINES OF NEW ZEALAND 2019

95 Points

This is very convincing, complex and downright impressive pinot noir. The intense aromas of ripe cherries and plums are framed in such intensely attractive oak spice and earthy, sous-bois complexity. The palate has regal, polished and powerful tannin and carries a vibrant core of very attractive, rich dark cherries. Drink or hold.
