Wine Summary Image

The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. Shepherds' dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks. Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point.

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and, James and Wendy Healy. Total involvement by the partners from the vineyard to the winemaking process through to the marketing of their regionally distinctive wines, ensures that Dog Point Vineyards remains a boutique and family oriented business producing wines with a clear point of difference.

94 Points

It has some richness of tropical fruit, but tang of grapefruit and gooseberry too, slight spice of cut green capsicum, though ripeness of fruit is the main theme. It has intensity and crunchy, a quartz-y texture in with a light creamy silkiness, and the finish is tight, flinty and long, and very passionfruity, leaving just a little smokiness in its wake. Flavour and precision. Seems to be a very good vintage for this wine.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

Bright, fresh, citrus driven sauvignon, with elements of honeydew melon, pears and gala apples in the background. A very pure, yet restrained, classic sauvignon expression.

Palate

The citrus core of flavours are juicy and intense. Deliciously refreshing saline acidity and mellow rounded texture on the finish. The wine calls for fresh, simple seafood, but as usual, can be enjoyed on its own.

Cellaring Potential

Drinks beautifully now or can comfortably be cellared for five years or more.

Winery Profile

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy.

Our philosophy is total involvement by the partners from the vineyard through the winemaking process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines.

Marlborough's Wairau Valley is the major grape growing region of New Zealand, a confined geographical area at the northern tip of the South Island. Abundant sunshine, low rainfall and cool autumn nights characterise our long growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich array of vibrant fruit flavours.

Fruit for our wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. These older well-established vines situated on free draining silty clay loams are supplemented with fruit from closely planted hillside vines with a clay loam influence.

Mouthwatering and vivid, with a laser beam of focus and intensity to the Meyer lemon, ruby grapefruit and dried mango flavors. Peppery white flower aromas and a touch of freshly grated ginger add complexity. Drink now.

If it’s searing acidity you crave, then I wholeheartedly recommend a top example of one of the most popular wines in the world, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Dog Point, a producer established by a couple of key members of the early Cloudy Bay team, makes such good and distinctive Marlborough Sauvignon that even I —not always the greatest fan of these wines —love it. Its regular Sauvignon Blanc is delicious as soon as it is released but unlike most of its peers continues to develop for two or three years in bottle. Dog Point’s special, lightly oaked Section 94 bottling is released later. The current vintage of Section 94 is 2017 and has such a strong struck-match aroma that it might appeal as an alternative to a Coche-Dury Meursault, but in my view needs to be kept a bit longer. Dog Point’s Chardonnay is also superior.

Very slightly reductive, struck-match nose and extra-bright fruit with strong passionfruit aromas and a certain amount of delicacy. Chalky finish. Lots of interest here. Very youthful and energetic indeed. Complimenti! 17 Points.
