Expert Reviews

95 Points | James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

"There’s a subtle bend into more purple fruit on the nose here with a gentle, leafy edge, across red cherries, plums and fresh oak. The palate has such tautness and firm, dense yet fine tannin – barriques used here – with some very attractive red plums and mulberries and toasty young wood to close. A blend of 86% shiraz and 14% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold."

Winery Tasting Notes

This is a modern style of Australian red that also respects the tradition of using varietal blending to create a more rounded wine. The Shiraz brings intense plum fruit sweetness and dark berry and chocolate characters, while the addition of a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon adds length and body.

Brand Profile Image

English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell's Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.

Today, Tyrrell's are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria.

Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future.

Tyrrell's Wines was awarded Winery Of The Year by James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010.

"Deep, bright, youthful purple/red hue, the aroma sweetly blackberry-ish and showing a glimpse of cabernet even though it's only about 10% of the blend. The wine is elegantly styled, supple in tannins and displays beautiful poise. Hints of mulberry throughout, the fruit quite concentrated and essency in the mouth, with some alcohol warmth at the end. It's been aged in barriques but oak is nigh invisible. A bright, almost callow wine with a promising future."
