James Halliday – 79/21% cabernet sauvignon and shiraz; small open fermenters; wild yeast; 2-week ferment; matured for 10 months in French oak (10% new). This is all about cabernet sauvignon kicking up its heels in the Barossa Valley and making no apologies for doing so. There is an edge of authority to its expression provided by the firm tannins, shiraz ending any suggestion of excess force. Bargain on a grand scale. Winery Profile

Very much a rising star, Alex Head has taken the long path to wine-making, starting with a degree in Biochemistry at Sydney University, then stints in fine wine retail, wholesale importers and auction houses. He followed this with vintage at a handful of superb Australian wineries including Torbreck and Tyrrells, before heading out on his own, with his first releases in 2008.

Already rated a 5-star producer by James Halliday and named one of his Top Ten Best New Wineries for 2011, Alex's wines are inspired by the wines of France's Cote Rotie, in particular, and are produced in quantities of at most one or two barrels.
