Heggies Vineyard is perched in the high country of Eden Valley where the combination of cool climate and high altitude provide the perfect conditions for producing some of Australia’s finest Chardonnay. The majority of the estate comprises of three favoured Burgundian clones that provide a range of flavour opportunities.

Fruit for this wine is selected from the older blocks on the estate which yield low crops and consistently produce Chardonnay of outstanding flavour intensity.

A wet winter in the Eden Valley set the vines up well for a healthy start to the growing season. Spring was drier than average providing good canopy growth. Summer days were warm and dry while nights remained cool throughout harvest which allowed the grapes to retain fresh fruit flavours and good levels of natural acidity.

Expert Reviews

Convincingly balanced, rich build

93 Points

Very expressive fruit on offer here, with such expressive and concentrated ripe peaches, as well as gently creamy elements. The palate is full of flesh and has very convincingly balanced, rich build through the finish. Drink over the next four years. Screw cap.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Pale green-gold.

Aroma

Fragrant aromas of fresh stone fruits and citrus zest with subtle hints of roasted hazelnuts and a touch of flint.

Palate

Flavours of freshly picked peaches and nectarines are complemented by a fine creamy texture on the mid palate, distinct and lively minerality and a refreshing citrus acid drive to finish.

Food Match

Enjoy with pan seared crispy skin salmon and citrus hollandaise sauce or tofu scramble with grilled asparagus.

Cellar

Restrained in its youth this wine will continue to build richness and texture with long term cellaring.

Winery Profile

The magnificent sweep of country that is now the Heggies Vineyard had been grazing land for most of its settled history and was owned by local grazier and bushman, Colin Heggie, before being purchased by Wyndham Hill Smith, then Manager of the Yalumba Wine Company.

Friends since school days, Colin and Wyndham's friendship continued into adulthood and throughout their lengthy negotiation over the purchase of Heggie's land - a negotiation that was, it has been suggested, not a lot more than an excuse for relaxed chats about land, cattle, horses, wine and life!

Planting began in 1971 on the tough North Eastern corner of the property and the first wine was released in 1979. It was the first wine to bear the idiosyncratic label that features a drawing of Colin Heggie, the bushman, looking out over the fledgling Heggies plantings astride his faithful chestnut, Jack.

At 550 metres above sea level, Heggies is one of Australia's highest altitude vineyards and also one of its coolest. The close-planted clonally-selected grafted vines are grown in semi-drought conditions, meaning the soil is lean and hungry - a thin layer of grey sandy loam over clay and decomposed rock. The vines compete vigorously for moisture and nutrient, encouraging roots to dig deep into the soil where it is moist and cool throughout all seasons.

Another glass please

92 Points

I like this - a lot. If you enjoy oaky and flinty Chardys I suggest you wander over this way. This is a great drink with plenty in the bag to impress. Get in deep with ripe peaches and nectarines with a touch of citrus. The length and width through the mouth are hard to escape - that generosity is the thing that keeps me coming back. It's that welcoming friend who over caters and you can't help but continue to return for more. Whipped cream and vanilla slide through with ease drawing a long and sustained finish. Another glass please. Drink to five years.
