Leston Shiraz was the Burch family’s first Margaret River-based wine. At the time, it made a big statement about what an under-rated asset the grape was in the area, and about diversity. That message still resonates.

Leston Shiraz helped spread the word because it is a friendly, approachable kind of Shiraz, not full-blown and bossy, but melded by west coast ‘Mediterranean’ mild winters and warm – not hot – summers.

18 months in a combination of new and old barrels of varying sizes. Very light and savoury on the nose and palate. Quite a delicate wine, but with alcohol poking through the mid palate. Lacking in density and concentration. - Erin Larkin

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2018 retains the party line with signature blackberry intensity, a touch of sweet red fruits, high spice and a bright, sunny disposition. Like a few 2018 reds from that part of the world, there is a strong line of pepper running through the palate that will either hold great appeal for the drinker or not. It definitely brings an energy to the wine, but it can wear. Oak and tannins, on the other hand, are all together on the side of balance.

History

Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: "I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium wines". This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park.

Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.

Our Philosophy

This founding two region philosophy aligns with Howard Park's wine making philosophy which adopts an ethos for integrating the old with the new. Howard Park embraces modern technology whilst employing traditional wine making techniques and produces internationally recognised wines of the highest quality. As a result our Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power with a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest.
