Light, bright straw-yellow colour, with a subtle bouquet showing freshly-curing hay, toasted hazelnut, lemon curd and a hint of egg custard. All typical chardonnay characters, and the bright acidity is very much in keeping with the blanc de blancs style. It's tight, intense, piercingly long and refreshing. A high-impact, impressive wine of great finesse and power, the aftertaste lingering on and on. The citrusy chardonnay fruit is refined and concentrated, the acidity carrying it long and satisfying. A terrific blanc de blancs, still very youthful and fresh. I'd cellar this for a couple more years.

Tasting Champagne is often an exercise in patience and here I sit with the Blanc de Blancs from Roederer admiring the nose awash with the fresh blossoms of apples, lemons and honeysuckle, crushed macadamia nuts, fresh peaches and a hint of sea spray, I know it is still a young whippersnapper. The fruit is exquisite, sourced from Mesnil-Sur-Oger and Avize in the Côte des Blancs and it is all freshness with a hint of nutty yeastiness from the 5 years on lees before release, this is going to age beautifully over the next decade or so, with mature flavours of mushrooms, truffle, umami and honeyed pastries. Plump, young and lively, you could get stuck into this over Christmas with some oysters or creamy Brie but I would wait for a while, let it really hit its stride over the next decade, you can feel smug and satisfied with your mature Blanc de Blancs and whoever is lucky enough to also get a glass.
