Wine Summary Image

In 1839 William and Elizabeth Oliver travelled to South Australia from Scotland and eventually settled in 1841 on land at McLaren Vale. Whitehill and Taranga farms, the names given to the northern and southern sections of this land, are located 2 km north of McLaren Vale overlooking the township. Taranga is a corruption of the aboriginal word Tarangk, meaning ‘the middle' which was used by the Kaurna, a local aboriginal tribe. Sheep and cattle were raised and orchards and vineyards were planted immediately upon arrival and the family prospered.

Both properties are still run by fifth generation descendants of William and Elizabeth, with the Whitehill property utilized for cropping and grazing sheep and cattle and boasting a rejuvenated stone ‘Chaff Shed' which is used as a function centre and Taranga, which consists of 100 hectares of land, being planted to many different varieties of red and white wine grapes.

James Halliday

93 Points

From 8-10yo estate blocks, open-fermented, matured in French and American hogsheads for 18 months. Dense, impenetrable purple; a full-bodied shiraz with dark chocolate/licorice/stewed plum flavours, fine-grained tannins and good length. Has its whole life in front of it.

Excellent shiraz. Satisfying fruit, beautiful balance, creamy mouthfeel and enough complex edges to keep you interested. Toast, meat, dark chocolate and plums. Everything in satisfyingly good order.

Dark chocolate and black plums, powerful aromatics - a mix of new and old oak. A measured dose of sweetness hits the front palate - savoury, coffee-bean complexity follows. Compelling shiraz. Speaks of region.

Moreish Appeal…

90 Points

One of those reliable drops you can easily turn to when the bottle shop shelves become a blur. It's a dense wine with a good whack of cedary oak. Think dark plums and berries, dark chocolate plus licorice all adding interest. Faint dashes of soy and baking spices come late with attractive fine spices clutching long. The depth of fruit fills the palate with ease calling you back with its moreish appeal. Drink now to six years.
