First created in the 50’s, St Henri is a time-honoured alternative expression of Shiraz. It is a unique style that hasn’t fallen victim to fashion or commercial meddling over the decades and holds its own whilst in the shadows of its Grange siblings. St Henri is made up of mostly shiraz, however sometimes includes some cabernet sauvignon to improve the structure. The 2012 includes 3% Cabernet.

Expert Reviews

97 points, Tyson Stelzer

St Henri was the same price as Grange when the two were first released in the 1950s. 2010 St Henri declared that this label is still deserving of greater respect than it is afforded, and 2012 confirms that this was no one-off. The mild summer, dry autumn and even development of small berries and bunches produced beautifully pure and distinguished fruit that plays perfectly to the St Henri style. The graceful, supple blue fruits of classic St Henri are on parade in a wine of effortless, refined persistence. Nuances of liquorice and dark chocolate are supported by definitive St Henri fruit tannins, seamlessly presented, with a silky, supple mouth feel and yet somehow still firm and enduring. A great St Henri of effortless longevity, following in the legacy of 2010 and promising a thrilling future. A blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Robe and Clare Valley, matured for 13 months in 50+ year old large oak vats.

Winery Tasting Notes

Nose:

At once Penfolds, at once and reassuringly an authentic, warmingly ‘old-style’ St Henri. A radiant ‘redness’ – an orb of red-currants, red liquorice and rhubarb. Earthy, gamey – cured meats, glazed ham, cold pan juice, scents charmingly emitted

Palate:

Solid. Aromatics conveyed/shared to palate – juniper, cinnamon, nutmeg, dry herbs. White milk chocolate, mocha and praline St Henri markers tussled to the fore. Integrated, fine and delicate tannins certainly not intimidated by any brash oak. Poised and balanced

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
