Winery Tasting Notes

Pewsey Vale Vineyard The Contours Riesling is characterised by a special site, sensitive vine growing and astute winemaking. The Contours Riesling is crafted from old vines grown on the coolest slope within this ruggedly beautiful single vineyard. Pale straw in colour with green hues. Intense classic lemon fruit aromas with a hint of white flowers. bottle aged characters of toast, clove oil and lemongrass have started to emerge and combine with the fresh citrus and white flowers of its youth. The palate has great length and depth with concentrated power, pristine fresh lime juice overlaid with toasted brioche, sage oil and lime marmalade. The wine finishes with soft, refreshing natural acidity.

Winery Profile

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard has a long and illustrious past. It was first established by Joseph Gilbert, an Englishmen who landed in Australia in 1839 from Wiltshire’s Vale of Pewsey. Joseph purchased the property in 1847 and named it after his ancestral home.

By 1841, just two years after his arrival, Joseph, the 38 year old son of a well-heeled English landowner, had built a fine homestead and planted Pewsey Vale's first grapevines. The vines were of a table grape variety, but an idea was starting to take shape...

In 1847 Joseph planted a one-acre vineyard, establishing Eden Valley's pioneer vineyard and one of Australia's first high altitude, cool climate vineyards.

During the 1920s, Pewsey Vale succumbed to the fate of so many of Australia's early vineyards, falling into disuse as a result of the severe economic hardship of the Great Depression. The vineyard's potential was rediscovered at a time when only the history books recorded the existence of the original vineyards.

In 1961, Pewsey Vale's then-owner, Geoffrey Angas Parsons, became aware that his property had once incorporated the region's earliest vineyard. Excited by his discovery, he wasted no time in paying a visit to his good friend Wyndham Hill Smith of Yalumba with a proposal to restore the Pewsey Vale vineyard.

Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Rieslings are approachable wines renowned for their delicacy, finesse and intense lemon and lime characters. Grapes are left on the vines to achieve their full ripening potential, made possible by the cooler harvest conditions at the high altitude. Characteristics of Pewsey Vale Rieslings are the high levels of well-balanced acids which greatly contribute to the extraordinary ageing potential of these wines.

For over 150 years Pewsey Vale Vineyard has produced aromatic white wines of exceptional style, varietal flavour and consistency. A reputation for success with these wines and a location high in Eden Valley inspired the planting of Gewürztraminer. Pewsey Vale Gewürztraminer captures the essence of our cool climate vineyard with delightful fragrance, and long pristine palate.

For over 150 years Pewsey Vale Vineyard has produced aromatic white wines of exceptional style, varietal flavour and consistency. A reputation for success with these wines and a location high in Eden Valley inspired the planting of Pinot Gris. Pewsey Vale Pinot Gris captures the essence of our cool climate vineyard with delightful fragrance, spice and rich texture.

Pewsey Vale Vineyard Prima Riesling is an early harvest style of wine made from grapes picked three to four weeks before the rest of the vineyard. Chosen for their fine citrus flavours, the grapes were carefully selected when their natural sugar levels were near 10º baumé. The final wine has been made in a semi-dry style which retains some of the fruit sugars in balance with the chalky mineral acidity. The naturally lower alcohol of the wine further heightens its refreshing character.

Graceful and generous

95 Points

As is to be expected, it’s rather tightly coiled upon opening with pointy angles of acidity, nashi pear juice and a little sniff of kerosene. Once it’s settled down though (I gave it an hour), the show really begins. Minerals sparkle all over the roof of the mouth like it was the inside of a geode and the textures soften into quite the graceful and generous wine. You can taste honey melted with butter over white toast on the lips and salty oyster shell on the tip of the tongue. Crunchy lemon and lime boiled lollies stain the mid palate, a lick of crushed almonds and spice on the sides and back and up above, there’s a warming retronasal length – lemon tart just starting to bake.
