This draws a more straightforward picture of essential brunello than the Altero, (this one is aged three years in large Slavonian barrels, then one year in bottle). Here the flavors are consistently tied back to the earth, the formidable tannin and fruit melded into a potent, black earthiness. At first bold, gamey and austere, it starts to show layers of flavor with air, driven by intensity toward what appears to be grandeur. This will probably be at its best ten to fifteen years from the vintage.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, which sees only cask, presents a very dark color along with more classic profile in its expressive nose and nuances of tobacco, sweet cherries, tar and minerals. Although it, too, shows excellent concentration and balance today, it comes across more austere and structured than the Altero. That said, my impression is that it will ultimately develop into a Brunello of greater complexity, depth and nuance. A day after opening it had blossomed into a splendid Brunello. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021.
