Wine Summary Image

This wine is made with 100% Shiraz grapes sourced from the Pogue vineyard, Toolamba in Central Victoria. The vineyard is 135 acres of prime viticultural land with extensive Goulburn River frontage. The fermentation was completed in 160 year old open top oak fermenters and specially selected organic yeast strain was utilised for this process. The wine was matured in a combination of one year old French Hogs Heads and century old large format oak casks for a period of six months.

Expert Reviews

Fans of The Pogues may be tempted to buy this wine on the name alone. I doubt they will be disappointed; it's not only organically grown and vegan-friendly but plush in vibrant, intense blackberry fruit. Deep purple colour. Aromas of blackberry pastille, raspberry, high spice and black plums are replicated on the palate with understated, sandy tannins. - Jeni Port

Winery Tasting Notes

A very youthful Shiraz expressing well integrated aromas of sweet oak alongside blackberries fruits. The palate is full of concentrated dark berry flavours, warm spice and fine, supple tannins. The subtle oak influence in this wine offers elegance and complexity. The perfect accompaniment to barbecued steak, braised beef or aged hard cheeses.

Winery Profile

Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia's most beautiful & historic wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria (120kms north of Melbourne), one of the nation's premium viticultural areas, the property comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters & creeks.

The vineyard comprises 200 hectares of vines including the French Rhone Valley whites of Marsanne, Viognier & Roussanne; the Rhone reds - Shiraz, Grenache & Mourvedre; along with traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc & Verdelho.

Vineyard plantings extend back to Tahbilk's founding with original pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines still surviving from 1860 - an eponymous wine produced from them since 1979.

Tahbilk is further blessed with an abundance of further "old vine" plantings including Shiraz from 1933 (the prime source for Tahbilk's 'Eric Stevens Purbrick' Shiraz releases), Cabernet Sauvignon back to 1949 and Marsanne from 1927 (a "sister" white release to the 1860 Vines Shiraz produced from them).

Harvest commences in early March and continues for five to six weeks with approximately 1,600 tonnes (red & white) grapes processed.Total production is over 100,000 cases with just over 20% being exported to the key markets of U.S.A., United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries.
