Winery Profile

The farming property "Printhie" has existed for well over 100 years. The name Printhie is taken from a now extinct goanna-like lizard that was quite common in the local area.

In 1978, the Swift family became only the third owners of Printhie. Until the mid-1990s farm activity was dominated by cropping and grazing. Jim and Ruth Swift, the second generation of Swifts to manage "Printhie", diversified farm operations by planting the first 12 hectares of grapes on a gentle north facing slope. With the return of the third generation of Swifts, Ed and Dave, to Printhie in the early-2000s, further vineyards were planted, the Printhie wine brand was established and a winery was built on the property for the 2004 vintage. A winemaker was employed, a sales team assembled in Sydney and regional NSW and growers were contracted to supply wine grape varieties that were not grown on the Printhie property.

Today, brothers Ed and Dave manage much of Printhie's operations overseeing viticulture, contract growers, marketing, export and business management. Printhie has representation in most Australian states and territories, has export markets to USA, Denmark, China and west Africa. Drew Tuckwell is in charge of winemaking responsibilities. Printhie has become the second largest producer in Orange (but still small by national standards) and is a highly respected producer of Orange regional wines. The future is looking bright.

In 2003 Printhie built a state of the art 350 tonne winery, designed to compliment the existing 100 year old woolshed that stands adjacent. The winery has since grown to a capacity of 500 tonnes.

Built using traditional galvanized iron, the building blends into the farming countryside. The winery is built in a unique way so that it utilises an air cavity in the walls to cool the building in summer. All wine storage is contained inside the building reducing our cooling costs and usage over the hot summer months. Due to power restrictions all equipment has also been designed to be as energy efficient as possible.

We also offer a Contract Winemaking service with 100 tonnes of capacity reserved for this purpose.
