Wine Summary Image

"Robert O’Callaghan is the very modest owner and winemaker of Rockford Wines in the Barossa Valley. One of the most respected boutique wineries in Australia, Rockford produces the Basket Press Shiraz (first vintage 1984) and the Black Shiraz, a sparkling red that is almost black in colour. In the l970s when wineries were updating their equipment, Robert bought and restored buildings from the 1850's and old winemaking machinery so that he could make his wines using both traditional winemaking techniques and equipment - his only concession to the latter half of the twentieth century is refrigeration and some new forms of yeast. The Shiraz fruit is sourced from local growers – many of the best dry-grown old vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa – including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, the Eden Valley and Central Barossa. The vines are between 60 and 136 years old giving fruit of tremendous colour, power and richness."

Expert Reviews

95 Points. Gary Walsh - Wine Front. Nov 07

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz and St Henri Shiraz are my two favourite South Australian shiraz. These are the wines I buy year in, year out, except when the vintage is a bit iffy (like 2000 and 2003). This looked good on day one, but really came up smiling after a solid days rest.

Very dark in colour with aromas of dark fruit, plum pudding, earth, dark chocolate and a little rosy vanilla oak. A deep brooding wine. On the palate dark fruit and some brighter raspberry flavours with leather, dark chocolate, earth and tasteful vanilla oak in support. Still quite tight and backwards with a lovely spread of fine tannin and fresh balanced acidity. Feels good and smooth and long. An excellent basket press and almost certainly a sleeper.

Winery Tasting Notes

Black Shiraz is the sort of stuff I was weaned on. Uniquely Autralian, It`s loaded with rich ripe fruit flavour and very fine tannin - it`s a big old fashioned red that will put a smile on the faces of all those who drink it - but the biggest smiles will belong to those who are patient enough to put it away in the cellar for 10 years.

Winery Profile

Rockford - The wines are sold through Adelaide retailers only (and the cellar doo) and are unknown to most eastern Australian wine-drinkers, which is a great pity because these are some of the most individual, spectacularly flavoured wines made in the Barossa today, with an emphasis on old, low-yielding dryland vineyards.

Mid-garnet; surprisingly elegant and light-bodied; has good flavour and length, but seems a fraction under-ripe; better than the other extreme.
