Not considered a top-notch vintage but still very impressive, this is a youthful, unevolved wine that seemed every bit as backward as the 1996 and even more youthful than the 1997. Deep purple with sweet creme de cassis notes intermixed with underbrush, creosote, and pepper, very rich, vigorous, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this is still a baby. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.

This year, I prefer the Rifle Range Cabernet. I’m becoming increasingly less convinced by the 2010 vintage for Barossa Shiraz. Some beauties of course, but I like it less than, say, 2004.

Coal, aniseed, chocolate, vanilla, black fruit – very ripe year Rockford smells plus a little lift. It’s rich, fleshy and very ripe, perhaps veering towards porty (like 2002), though finds fair balance. There’s a little alcohol warmth, a lovely set of ripe silty tannin and some fresher raspberry fruit peeking out from behind the dark clouds. Unevolved and a little grunting as a youngster, but has good long term potential. Noted some herbal flavour in the after-taste. A good Basket Press and I could score it 93, though it was never in the hunt for anything higher.
