Expert Reviews

Not surprising that a vineyard originally set up to make pinot should make some pretty good pinot. Lots of red fruits, cherry and strawberry on the nose, but then there's a little underlay of truffly, mushroom-like character. The palate is completely seamless, medium-bodied, and with a touch of spice and berry working together. Tannins are fine, the oak lightly applied. Altogether, it makes a very tidy pinot noir.

Winery Tasting Notes

Bright red with moderate intensity, the complex aromas are alluring and abundant. Dark cherry, Turkish delight with forest floor notes, the technique of whole bunch fermentation also adds a gamey, stalky, complexity to the aroma. The palate is medium weighted with soft layered jubey red fruits. 9 months maturation in new French Oak Barriques has contributed lovely subtle charry sweetness, and the soft acid backbone shall ensure the wine drinks best for 2-3 years to come.

Winery Profile

The Smithbrook vineyard is located amongst majestic “tall trees” on a pristine hill in the Pemberton wine region in the south west corner of Western Australia.

Planted in the late 1980s, the vineyard represents the most significant mature vineyard in the region. The warm Indian Ocean to the West and the cool Southern Ocean to the south create a maritime climate.

Smithbrook focuses on two key varietals - Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, identified as the best varieties for this region.

Smithbrook has a natural, sustainable approach to managing the vineyard; low-yielding dry grown vines, roaming Guinea Fowl to control insects and no harmful sprays all assist to grow balanced vines. Vineyard philosophy employed includes rigorous programme of heavy pruning, minimal irrigation and low cropping in order to increase the fruit quality of the vineyard.
