Wine Summary Image

When commentators talk of the potential of NZ Syrah to eventually outshine Pinot Noir, it is the quality of wines such as the Te Mata Bullnose that they are talking about.

This has a wow factor, as in 'wow, didn't know NZ Syrah could be that deep, darkly-flavoursome and powerful'. We associate them with cool climate pepper and spice, and the Bullnose has trowel-fuls of exotic spices and delicate florals.

The palate is rich and velvety without excessive weight, all supple and lithe. It's a structured, graceful, wonderful wine.

Expert Reviews

Expressing precision and purity, combined with brooding strength and complexity, this is spectacular and breathtaking. Immediately appealing with dark plum, sweet cherry, graphite, olive, spicy oak and floral aromas, it’s succulent and fleshy in the mouth delivering layers of seductive flavours backed by beautifully infused tannins. It’s mouthfilling and velvety with a prolonged engaging finish.

PALATE Lush with plum and boysenberry, the palate has immense depth and is interwoven with black liquorice, spice and velvety chocolate tannins. A deep delight, replete in detail, classically beautiful Bullnose purity with power, a sumptuous dark heart, and a long, structured, elegant finish.

Winery Tasting Notes

Displaying Bullnose’s classic vibrant, purple-edged magenta colour. This has perfume, plush berry fruit and underlying power. That signature Bullnose ‘nose’ displays dianthus and freesia aromas with fresh raspberry, black cherry, and cola throughout. The front palate’s rich and soft entry is loaded with those same ripe, concentrated fruit notes with superfine tannins and a refreshing fine finish

Winery Profile

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).

Almost glass-staining purple colour, very bright; the bouquet loaded with an amalgam of brown spice aromas, toasted nuts too, including clove, nutmeg and pepper. A powerful, concentrated and tensioned wine with bright acidity and firm but measured tannins that lead into a very long finish. Great potential here. 12 JAN 2023 2024–2036
