Wine Summary Image

Our ‘Old School’ Chardonnay is from specific blocks from our Langton & Hayview vineyards in Mt Barker. The fruit was picked 2 weeks after that for our Styx Gully Chardonnay as we are after a riper style. It’s all barrel fermented (~40% new) and all goes through malolactic fermentation to produce a complex, textured wine.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Bright and clear with a light straw colour.

Aroma

Quite perfumed with the ripe melon fruit aromas that are characteristic of Chardonnay. There’s also a distinctive butterscotch/honeycomb character that’s come from the malolactic fermentation, adding complexity to the nose.

Palate

This is a well textured and well flavoured Chardonnay. After 5 months in barrel post fermentation, the rich, ripe melon fruit flavours are well integrated with the butterscotch characters. It is a full, ripe, complex style with the French oak that’s been used influencing the flavour and also the structure; the wine finishes with a touch of firmness, adding length to the palate.

Enjoy now with a well flavoured meal or cellar for a while to allow it to develop more buttery notes and some bottle age complexity.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.
