Our ‘Old School’ Chardonnay is from specific blocks from our Langton & Hayview vineyards in Mt Barker. The fruit was picked 2 weeks after that for our Styx Gully Chardonnay as we are after a riper style. It’s all barrel fermented (~40% new) and all goes through malolactic fermentation to produce a complex, textured wine.

Winery Tasting Notes

Bright and clear with a light golden straw colour. Has an attractive ‘biscuity’ character (think Anzac biscuits) with hints of honeycomb along with the peachy stone fruit and delightful creme brulee aromas so typical of the variety. This Chardonnay has a really ‘silky’ palate; it has good weight and fullness along with those fresh, stone fruit flavours. The 2023 season was a little cooler than previous so to build its palate weight and creaminess, the wine was kept on its yeast lees for two months and stirred every two weeks. It then spent a further 6 months in barrel post fermentation so is well integrated; the peach & melon fruit flavours being well balanced with the subtle oak characters.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.
