Wine Summary Image

As with previous years, we have combined the strengths of this variety grown in two different regions in our 2017 Tempranillo. The 72% from Frankland River provides the depth of fruit flavour and the balance from the Perth Hills (28%) gives the savoury, ‘rustic’ characters that Tempranillo is renowned for. Maturation for ~10 months in once & twice used barriques adds complexity without too much oak flavour to override the fruit.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep garnet red with a crimson hue.

Aroma: Spicy plum fruit aromas with intense ‘broody’ fruits. Hint of sweet oak with some smoky tamarillo characters.

Palate: A well flavoured wine with loads of red berry fruits predominating. It has the dusty, savoury notes typical of Tempranillo with its good structure coming from the ‘chewy’and lightly drying tannins. With its good structure and great length of flavour it can be matched with many foods or cellared for the short term for further complexity.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.
