Wine Summary Image

West Cape Howe was founded in 1997, quickly becoming one of Western Australia’s favourite wine brands. Owned by four Western Australian families, Gavin Berry has been Managing Partner & Senior Winemaker since 2004 and he now has had over 30 vintages in the Great Southern.

The winery is now at the picturesque ‘Langton’ vineyard, in the heart of the Mt Barker wine district. Over time, the partnership has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unequalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

Winery Tasting Notes

Dark and dense crimsony red colour. With 18 months bottle age before release, it is well integrated on the nose with rich aromas of red berry and dark berry/blackcurrant fruits and all complexed by the cedar/tobacco characters from its maturation in French oak. With its rich dark berry fruit flavours and great tannin structure, our ‘Book Ends’ is a classic Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon. It has the typical red berry fruits and some ‘bramble’ berry and blackcurrant/ cassis flavours together with a slight ‘dusty’ character from its period of oak maturation to add to its complexity. It has cedary notes and a touch of spice along with a hint of varietal dried herb character which all makes for a great wine to match with food! With its gently drying, slightly chewy tannins, it has great persistence and palate length and will age well.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.
